Our Commitment to Inclusion

At Tilbury Nursery, we believe every child is unique and deserves to feel valued, understood and supported. We are committed to inclusive practice and ensuring that all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, are able to thrive within our setting.

As a small nursery, we know our children well and provide personalised, responsive support tailored to individual needs.

💛 Early Identification

We carefully monitor children’s development through ongoing observation, assessment and close partnership with parents.

If concerns arise, we act early.

We use:
• Daily observations
• Progress tracking
• The 2-Year Progress Check
• Discussions with parents
• Individual assessments where needed

Early identification allows us to put support in place quickly and effectively.

🗣 Communication Support

As communication is a key priority at Tilbury Nursery, we provide:

• Visual timetables
• Now and next boards
• Makaton signs and gestures
• Repetition and modelling of language
• Small group language sessions
• Close partnership with Speech and Language professionals where required

We create a communication-friendly environment so every child has a voice.

🧠 Working with Professionals

👩‍🏫 Individualised Support

Support is tailored to each child’s needs. This may include:

• Individual Support Plans (ISP/IEP)
• Small group interventions
• One-to-one support where appropriate
• Adapted activities and differentiated planning
• Visual supports and structured routines

We review support regularly to ensure children are making progress from their starting points.

🌈 Emotional and Behavioural Support

We understand that behaviour is a form of communication.

Our approach is influenced by Attachment and Trauma-informed practice. We provide:

• A strong key person system
• Emotion coaching
• Calm spaces
• Consistent routines
• Clear and predictable boundaries

We support children to feel safe, regulated and ready to learn.

🤝 Partnership with Parents

When needed, we work closely with external professionals to ensure children receive the right support.

This may include:

• Inclusion Development Officer
• Speech and Language Therapists
• Occupational Therapists
• Paediatricians
• Health Visitors
• Local Authority SEND team

We support families with referrals and attend meetings as part of a team around the child.
Parents are central to everything we do.

We:
• Share concerns sensitively and honestly
• Hold regular review meetings
• Work together on strategies
• Support families through referral processes
• Celebrate progress together

We believe strong home–nursery partnerships lead to the best outcomes for children.

📈 Monitoring Progress

Children with SEND are supported to make progress in small, meaningful steps.

We:
• Set realistic, achievable targets
• Review plans termly or more frequently if needed
• Adjust strategies based on progress
• Prepare children carefully for transitions

Our aim is always to build independence, confidence and readiness for the next stage of learning.

🌟 Our Inclusive Environment

 At Tilbury Nursery, inclusion means:

• All children play and learn together
• Activities are adapted, not children excluded
• Differences are celebrated
• Every child belongs

We are proud to be a nurturing setting where every child is supported to succeed.
